OUHC Bertrand Renovation: Expanding Healthcare Access in Lafayette
Renovating a Landmark to Serve Community Health Needs
At Kent Design Build, we take pride in delivering healthcare construction that meets the evolving needs of local communities. Our work on the OUHC Bertrand renovation in Lafayette, Louisiana, is a prime example—transforming a legacy commercial site into a state-of-the-art facility for Ochsner University Hospital & Clinics.
Once complete, this project will bring high-quality outpatient care to more residents and support the growing demand for accessible healthcare in Acadiana.
A Strategic Healthcare Renovation Project
The 110,000-square-foot facility including 80,000 sq ft of renovations and 30,000 sq ft of shell space is repurposing a former newspaper printing press facility into a modern clinical environment designed to reflect current healthcare design standards. This expansion is a major step in the growth of Ochsner’s community hospital network in South Louisiana.
Key construction components include:
Selective demolition of legacy infrastructure and press foundations
Upgrades to all MEP systems (mechanical, electrical, plumbing)
Complete interior buildout for outpatient and clinical operations
Exterior façade improvements that modernize the building’s presence
Once finished, the updated space will help OUHC better serve the Lafayette region with expanded capacity and a renewed commitment to patient care.
Navigating Construction Challenges with Precision
Renovating older commercial spaces for clinical use requires foresight and flexibility. Throughout the OUHC Bertrand project, our team has navigated structural inconsistencies, foundation gaps, and outdated utility routing with precision.
Thanks to the Construction Manager at Risk (CMAR) delivery method and Lean construction sequencing, we were able to:
Accelerate decision-making
Minimize disruptions to surrounding infrastructure
Absorb scheduling setbacks without impacting overall project milestones
Even when unforeseen foundation issues arose, the Kent team quickly realigned our approach to maintain both safety and quality standards.
Building Toward a Healthier Future in Lafayette
Ultimately, this project is about more than concrete and steel, it’s about community impact. The OUHC Bertrand renovation will bring expanded healthcare access to Lafayette families, offering a renewed space designed with patients and providers in mind.
As we near project completion, Kent Design Build remains committed to delivering outcomes that matter—creating spaces where care can happen.
