New Life for an Old Space: How Smart Renovation Supports Ministry and Learning

Growth at First Baptist Christian School in Lafayette brings an exciting challenge: the need for space that not only serves students but also supports ministry and reflects the school’s Christ-centered mission. Rather than build new, leaders take a stewardship-minded approach and look just across the street to the former Davidson Meaux Law Office, an established structure ready to be reimagined for a higher purpose.

With support from Diverse Studio (architect), Fox-Nesbit (structural engineer), M&E Consulting, and Kent Design Build, the vision is taking shape. Together, we're transforming a former law office into a dynamic two-story facility—flexible by design, built for growth, and grounded in faith and the future.

From Law Office to Learning Hub

Kent Design Build joined early in the process, assisting with demolition during planning and then leading the full renovation. The team brings experience in transforming existing buildings into high-performing spaces that align with the values of those who use them.

Led by Superintendent PJ Valls and Project Manager Dylan Malbrough, along with the Kent field team, the project is moving forward with clarity and care.

Inside the updated space:

  • The first floor includes a reception area, breakout space, teacher lounge, and restrooms

  • The second floor features additional restrooms and five to seven flexible classrooms

  • There is room for future use as study halls, lab spaces, or ministry programs

Leaders are also considering moving the senior class into the new space, an early sign of its long-term value.

Clear Communication, Strong Execution

Older buildings often come with surprises, but Kent’s approach keeps the project on track.

“We come in here and put a fine-tooth comb on everything,” PJ says. “We catch issues before they become problems. It all comes down to communication, triple-checking the plans, and staying ahead.”

Daily coordination with the design team ensures nothing is left to chance. Every detail is reviewed. Every decision supports the mission.

More Than a Renovation

This isn’t just a building update. It’s a strategic investment in students, teachers, and the future of ministry at First Baptist Christian School.

It’s also a reflection of what Kent Design Build delivers, purposeful construction rooted in partnership, clarity, and mission alignment.

At Kent Design Build, we pair creative design with fiscal responsibility to deliver spaces that honor our clients’ mission and long-term goals. By rethinking materials, optimizing methods, and identifying smart savings, we help bring visions to life—without compromising intent or value.

This project brings that commitment to life, transforming a former law office into a flexible, future-ready space that supports both learning and ministry.

At Kent Design Build, we don’t just build buildings. We build what matters.
